Furlough: Warning as fraud reports to HMRC spiral to 21,000 – impacts explored | Personal Finance | Finance
Some reports, though, have suggested certain employers have been unscrupulous, bending the rules for their own financial gain – and the issue appears to be escalating as the months roll on.
HMRC has confirmed to Express.co.uk that as of January 12, 2021, there have been 21,707 reports of potential furlough fraud.
This is compared to the 7,791 reports of furlough fraud received as of August 2020.
A number of different instances have arisen where the law could potentially be being broken, and were revealed to the whistleblowing charity, Protect, in 2020.
