Explained: What is mini-LED display tech that Apple will be offering soon

0

Apple is looking at adopting a new display technology for iPads and MacBooks and it’s called mini-LED display. Apple’s interest in mini-LED may force other laptop brands and tablet makers to follow Apple as well. By the end of next year, you can expect to see the term mini-LED in product specifications pages quite often. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is said to be “actively looking for second suppliers of key Mini LED components” as the tech giant wants to use them in MacBooks.
Apple’s interest in mini-LED displays is simply because this new tech offers better colours and display quality without costing a lot of money. This means you will get better contrast ratios and colour accuracy in large screen devices like laptops and tablets without spending too much. Here’s what you need to know.
What is mini-LED
You can consider mini-LED to be derived from backlit LCD display technology. Now, mini-LED uses very small LED backlights, spread across the entire panel, instead of using large backlights in LCDs. Each LED backlight in a mini-LED panel is said to be less than 0.2mm. So, what does this do? These small LEDs help in achieving way better local dimming than traditional LCDs. Now, local dimming is important, otherwise you will get backlight bleeding. Usually, in cheap quality panels, you will easily find bright patches of light. This affects the contrast ratios. Now, with mini-LED displays you will get deeper black and higher contrast. Experts claim that it will be similar to results that you find on OLED display panels.
What will be the actual display quality like
Mini-LED displays are like a cheap alternative to OLED panels that are easier to manufacture. It’s superior form of LCD display technology in which backlight diodes are kept tiny. So, for devices like tablets and laptops, you can expect to get a more immersive experience and the picture quality is bound to be better.
Having said that, there’s another thing called micro-LED. Note that mini-LED and micro-LED are two different technologies. Mini-LED is superior LCD technology that comes with matrix to filter the backlight but micro-LED is totally an OLED display technology where separate Red, Blue and Green LEDs emit light and you can consider each of the pixels glowing.
OLED quality is what is desired but due to cost and complex manufacturing process, OEMs try to bring new innovations in LCD technology and mini-LED is the latest.
With mini-LED displays, HDR content will look better. Overall, you will get to see better and more range of colours, improved contrast ratios, higher brightness and a wider colour gamut. The biggest USP is that mini-LED will allow devices to remain thin just like they are right now.
