Flashpoint Beyond unfolds new details about the alternate timeline’s Suicide Squad.
The miniseries — written by Geoff Johns, Jeremy Adams and Tim Sheridan with art by Xermánico and Mikel Janín — returns DC readers to the Flashpoint Universe, created by Flash Barry Allen when he went back in time to save his mother’s life. A preview for Flashpoint Beyond #4 features a news broadcast that confirms the creation of the Suicide Squad in this universe. However, instead of being a ragtag group of villains under the coercion of Amanda Waller, Flashpoint‘s Task Force X is quite different and is directly controlled by another DC hero.
The broadcast states that this Suicide Squad is comprised of “hundreds of the world’s most dangerous metahumans,” all being used to fight Wonder Woman’s Amazonian army in Europe. In Flashpoint Beyond #1, Waller proposed her task force to Congress, who appears to have greenlit her plan by Beyond #4. While Waller is behind the supervillain squad, rather than putting bombs in its members’ heads, she is having the Son of Saturn aka Jemm control them telepathically. Created by Greg Potter and Gene Colan and first appearing in 1984’s Jemm, Son of Saturn #1, Jemm is a Red Saturnian that possesses abilities similar to Martian Manhunter.

- Thomas Wayne is quickly closing in on the Clockwork Killer, but his investigation might be impeded by young Dexter Dent and his own vigilante agenda: breaking his mother out of Arkham!
Whether readers will eventually see the Suicide Squad at war with the Amazons in the issue remains to be seen, though their inclusion in Beyond further adds on to the lore of Flashpoint. Beyond serves as a sequel to Johns and artist Andy Kubert’s original event from 2011, which explored the ramifications of Barry’s time-traveling with Bruce Wayne’s father becoming Batman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman starting a massive war, among other changes to the DC Universe. Beyond focuses on Flashpoint Batman (Thomas Wayne) waking up in the alternate universe once again, trying to solve the mystery of how the Flashpoint timeline has returned and how he can restore the main DC Universe.
Where Did Readers Leave Off in Flashpoint Beyond?
In the preview, Thomas examines the body of Eobard Thawne aka the Reverse Flash, who was found murdered by the series’ “Clockwork Killer” at the end of Flashpoint Beyond #3. The serial killer has been targeting DC characters who normally possess the power to manipulate time. The prior issue also teased Dexter Dent’s evolution into Robin, the “Boy Terror,” who can be seen exploring the Batcave while saying “This is it” in the preview.
Dexter Dent is the son of Judge Harvey Dent and Gilda Dent, and now lives with Thomas in Wayne Manor after his father was murdered. Also seen in the preview, his mother is currently a patient in Arkham Asylum, which prompted her transformation into Flashpoint‘s version of Two-Face.
Flashpoint Beyond #4 is written by Johns, Adams and Sheridan with interior art by Xermánico and Janín, colors by Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Jordie Bellaire, letters by Rob Leigh and main cover art by Mitch Gerads. Variant covers for the issue are contributed to by Xermánico, Jim Cheung, Jay David Ramos and Francis Manapul. The issue goes on sale Aug. 2 from DC Comics.
