Carmel sand castle fun, 1964 – Monterey Herald

Participants in the Great Sand Castle Contest on Carmel Beach in 1964. This year’s contest, which takes place Sept. 17, will celebrate its 59th anniversary. Contest officials confessed to an arithmetic error that caused them to celebrate their 59th anniversary in 2019. Taking place on the sand between 10th and 12th avenues, judging is scheduled to start at noon. This year, competitors will be asked to create a sand sculpture, architectural or otherwise, from any era they choose from Carmel Beach’s past (historic or prehistoric — think deep sea creatures) according to a press release. Non-monetary bribes for judges are encouraged. For more information visit
