BMW’s M Division breaks sales record, led by EVs

BMW’s M Division just set a new sales record in 2022, selling 177,257 hotted-up vehicles in 2022 to be up 8.4 per cent year-on-year (YoY).

Interestingly its top-seller was electric, in the form of the BMW i4 M50 fastback, a dual-motor performance EV with system power of 400kW.

“For us, this is a clear signal that the unique M feeling has arrived in the world of electrified vehicles,” said BMW M GmbH head of customer, brand and sales Timo Resch.

The most important single market in 2022 was again the USA, with the second biggest sales region again being the German domestic market, followed by the UK.

The company’s press release didn’t detail sales by model.

BMW M staged various product reveals over 2022 such as the second-generation BMW M2 coupe with its signature straight-six and manual gearbox option; the 480kW plug-in hybrid XM crossover; and the first ever M3 Touring wagon.

This year will also bring a model based on the electric BMW i7 limo called M70, and on the combustion side there is an upcoming upgrade for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M models in the second quarter of 2023. There are also the niche M4 CSL and M3 CS models.

Longer term BMW M says its transformation towards electric mobility “has also already been mapped out”, the company said, referring specifically to an integrated driving dynamics control system and an electric M xDrive AWD system with four motors.

The overall percentage of BMW sales in 2022 (totalling 2,100,692 units) that were M cars was 8.4 per cent, coincidentally the same figure as its YoY growth.
