Winter weather impacts area roads, travel in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The wintery weather continues across our region Friday night, and a mix of winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect for all of our served counties.

Additional lake enhanced upslope snow will be possible Friday into Saturday, especially for the higher terrain. Much colder temperatures are expected to move into the area tonight through Monday morning.

The snowy weather mad for slick road conditions across the region, and crews have been out working hard to make travel as safe as possible. The crews focus has been on the main roads, which are starting to look clearer in several parts of the region. But those traveling on the side streets and back roads still need to use caution.

While some major roadways and interstates have been clear for several hours, the winter weather slowed down vehicles on busy interstates such as I-64, with those who were out going well-below the speed limit as an extra precaution.

Workers at the travel plaza on the West Virginia Turnpike also told 13 News they anticipate seeing fewer drivers stopping by on Friday evening, despite the area usually being a busy area for drivers.

Throughout the night Friday, there could be more accumulation and icy roads in some areas.

Anyone who has to be out on the roads should remember to take it a little slower and tap the break. While some of the roadways may seem clear, there still could be potential dangers such as black ice. Drivers should also be prepared by bringing emergency supplies such as blankets, hats, gloves, coats, snacks, phone chargers, etc. just in case of an emergency during the low temperatures.
