West Indies former skippers reject the Central Contract offer

The Caribbean nation recently unveiled its list for the Central Contract ahead of the 2023-2024 season. The list has been released for both men’s and women’s teams based on the performance and conduct of each player throughout the 2022-2023 season. The names of all the players after much speculation and consideration from the selection panel has been approved by the Board of Directors. 

Former skippers reject the contract

In a remarkable incident, legendary West Indies cricketers, also former captains namely Nicholas Pooran, Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers have rejected the Board’s contract which came as a shock to all the fans. Despite declining the central contract offer, they have agreed to their availability for all of the West Indies T20 Internationals for the upcoming season. The decision also means that there is an increased possibility of the veterans being included in the T20 World Cup 2024 squad. 

The Lead Selector of the men’s team said about the upcoming World Cup “With a busy year of cricket ahead, in all three formats, we have held several detailed discussions with the two Head Coaches on the brand of cricket they want to play. We are very clear in the direction we want to go. The players who have been offered contracts are among those who we expect to feature, as we look to build towards challenging for the top spot when we host and compete in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 on home soil.We also have away Test Series in Australia and England – these are two major assignments whilst in the 50-over format we look to build a nucleus of players aimed towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.”

Men’s team list

The players who agreed to the central contract from the Men’s team are as follows: 

Alick Athanaze, Kraigg Brathwaite, Keacy Carty, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Joshua Da Silva, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, and Romario Shepherd.
