Waze App: Google’s ‘other’ maps app will tell you about roads which are accidents prone

While Google Maps may be the preferred — likely to be the most used — navigation app for users, there’s another app which the company owns. Google’s Waze navigation app is now getting a new feature that will help drivers avoid car accidents. The app will now warn drivers if they are approaching a road that has a history of crashes.
The feature is based on data from Waze’s community of users. When a user reports an accident, the app records the location of the accident and adds it to its database. The app then uses this data to identify roads that have a high accident rate.
When a driver is approaching a road with a history of crashes, Waze will display a pop-up notification alerting them to the fact. The notification will also provide information about the number of crashes that have occurred on the road in the past year.
In a blog post, Google said that crash injuries are estimated to be the eighth leading cause of death globally – “and Wazers around the globe report accidents about every two seconds.”

Using AI to inform users

Google is using AI and reports from the Waze community, crash history alerts combine historical crash data and key information about users route like elevation, traffic levels or whether it is a highway or not. “If your route includes a crash-prone road, we’ll show you an alert before you reach that section of your journey. To minimise distractions, we limit the number of alerts drivers see, and don’t show them on roads they regularly navigate,” said Google in a blog post.
Quite often Google ‘tests’ certain features in Waze first before bringing it to Maps. It remains to be seen whether it will be the case with this feature or not.
