Sydney defeat Collingwood by 33 points, MCG, Isaac Heeney

Sydney has blown the reigning premiers out of the water, smashing Collingwood at the MCG by 33 points on Friday night.

Led by midfielder Isaac Heeney with 29 disposals and two goals, the Swans annihilated the Pies just hours after they unveiled their 2023 premiership flag in front of their home ground fans.

It serves as a scary wake up call for the Magpies, who have now started their season 0-2, coming off a loss to the Giants in Opening Round.

The Swans led by as much as 52 points in the final term, as the key forwards of the Swans took apart Collingwood’s backline.

Another pre season under their belts and the introduction of Brodie Grundy has also helped Sydney to improve on the game plan that has seen them reach a 2022 grand final and play in the elimination final a year later.

Heeney spoke candidly on the Swans’ game plan that has proved deadly in the first two rounds of their 2024 campaign.

“The synergy is there. We’ve got to ride this wave for as long as we can,” Heeney said on Fox post match.

“The young fellows stepping up in the midfield, you got the boys up forward doing their job and the defenders too.”

Logan McDonald proved his worth in front of goal, smashing four majors and 15 touches in Sydney’s win.

He’s already drawing comparisons to the great Lance Franklin, who booted over 1000 goals for both Sydney and Hawthorn.

However, the 21-year-old power forward says he’s happy doing his own thing.

“Bud’s (Franklin) a legend and he’s too hard to replace. I’m just trying to be my own player,” McDonald said.

The Swans have played in 23 of the last 28 finals series, starting their 2024 campaign 2-0 after defeating Melbourne in Opening Round.

It was Sydney’s biggest ever home and away crowd to witness the club take home a win in their 150-year history.
