South Africa-Afghanistan’s warmup match cancelled due to rains

Ahead of the much anticipated World Cup, all the teams are gearing up themselves for the big game. For this, teams play warm-up matches to see and note their respective performances. As the World Cup is set to commence on 5th of October, warm-up matches were scheduled between September 29 to October 3. In the warm-up match between the teams Afghanistan and South Africa, that was to be held today at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, incessant rain has likely washed out their chance for the warm-up match.

No possible way to carry on the match

The ODI warm-up match between the two countries got abandoned due to continuous rains that unleashed the city of Trivandrum. The teams have been restricted to their respective hotels where they are staying. After several rounds of inspection and speculation, the officials had to call off the warm-up game owing to rainy weather and wet fields. A few players of the Afghanistan team also arrived at the venue but to their bad luck, the match was called off at around 3:45 pm.

How long will this cloud of uncertainty loom over Trivandrum?

The reason for this uncertain weather are the two low pressures that have formed over the Arabian Sea Konkon-Goa coast and northeast Bay of Bengal. The Meteorological Department stated that there are chances of Kerala facing heavy rains and strong winds till Monday. It has also issued orange alerts in several parts of the city including Thiruvananthapuram and Kasargod while a yellow alert has been issued in the remaining district areas.

Team Afghanistan will fly to Guwahati the next day i.e Saturday for their second warm-up match against Sri Lanka while South Africa will face New Zealand on October 2 at the same venue as Greenfield International Stadium.
