Seal Beach Pier reopened this morning after being closed Saturday due to dangerous surf levels caused by a strong rainstorm.
The storm caused many Los Angeles and Orange County beaches to close due to safety concerns. OC beaches are especially vulnerable to flooding, according to the National Weather Service, including Seal Beach, Sunset Beach and Newport Beach.
Waves are expected to continue to calm today, though beachgoers are advised to remain cautious of the strong rip currents, forecasters said.
Despite lower tides, coastal flood advisories remain in effect until 8 p.m. tonight due to high surf and existing damage to coastal infrastructure, NWS said.
“Ocean swells are beginning to subside throughout the Southern California coastal waters, however high surf advisories and strong rip currents are likely to persist into this evening,” forecasters said today. “Increasing clouds are expected tonight as a weak storm system approaches the coast. Scattered, mostly light showers will affect the area Sunday afternoon and night.”
NWS projects next weekend will be similar with surf heights reaching 10 to 20 feet along the coast.
