The popularity of manga in Guwahati, Assam has been on the rise in recent years, thanks to the increasing popularity of anime.

According to the publication, the “manga craze” began as far back as the time when Animax was available on TV in India. Fans who wanted to continue following the story of their favourite anime started buying manga volumes. This led to a surge in demand for manga.
The most popular genres of manga in Guwahati are shounen and shoujo. Shounen manga is aimed at boys and typically features action-packed stories, while shoujo manga is aimed at girls and often focuses on romance and slice-of-life stories.
Some of the most popular manga titles in Guwahati include Naruto, Haikyuu, Demon Slayer, My Hero Academia, Bleach, Spy x Family. But the biggest fan favourite is Attack on Titan, which interestingly enough is not officially available to stream online in India.
Fans of anime got their manga fix in Panbazaar and Readers Hub in City Centre, as noted by Guwahati Plus. The former notably only sells popular shounen manga, while the latter offers a more diverse range of titles.
The Assam Book Fair held in December 2022 at the Assam Engineering Institute reportedly saw thousands of manga copies sold in just ten days.
The manga community in Guwahati is also growing rapidly. Several clubs and communities have been formed, such as the Assam Senpai Society, where fans can share recommendations, discuss the latest chapters, and cosplay as their favourite characters. The city has also seen screenings from the Japanese Film Festival, and various conventions, competitions, and events taking place based on the hobby.
