Madonna laughs at fan’s ‘reductive’ Lady Gaga shade on Celebration tour

Madonna fans put their love for the pop icon to the test while attending a recent stop on the ongoing Celebration tour.

Before the superstar began an acoustic rendition of her 1989 smash “Express Yourself” on stage Monday night at Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena, Madonna interacted with the crowd while sipping on a beer. That’s when an audience member’s hilarious sign caught her attention.

“You look it up, bitch!” Madonna replied after seeing the sign, which alluded to the word “reductive,” a clear reference to the singer-songwriter’s 2012 interview with Cynthia McFadden during which she was asked about alleged sonic similarities between Lady Gaga’s 2011 hit “Born This Way” and “Express Yourself.”

“It feels, uh, reductive,” Madonna responded after McFadden asked her for comment on “Born This Way” by Gaga. “Is that good?” McFadden replied, which prompted Madonna to reach for a nearby tea cup as she quipped: “Look it up.”

EW has reached out to Madonna’s representatives for comment.

Though the 2012 moment wedged an intense divide between both pop stars’ fans, Madonna and Gaga have since publicly patched things up.

After Gaga won an Oscar in 2019 for writing the A Star Is Born soundtrack song “Shallow,” Madonna shared a photo of the performers posing together with Gaga’s new Academy Award.

“Don’t mess with Italian girls,” Madonna wrote on social media alongside the photo, which prompted calls for a collaboration.

Earlier, in her 2017 Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two, Gaga addressed Madonna’s “reductive” comment.

“I admired her always, and I still admire her, no matter what she might think of me. No, I do. The only thing that really bothers me about her is that I’m Italian and from New York, so, like, if I’ve got a problem with somebody, I’m going to f—ing tell you to your face,” Gaga said in the film. “But, no matter how much respect I have for her as a performer, I could never wrap my head around the fact that she wouldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that I was ‘reductive’ or whatever.”
