The Indian Air Force will celebrate its 91st anniversary on Sunday, October 8.
Indian Air Force Day is observed on October 8 annually to celebrate the grandeur of the IAF and its pilots like Abhinandan Varthaman who dedicate their lives to help keep India safe. Indian Air Force Day: History and Key facts
- The IAF evolved from the Royal Indian Air Force, established on October 8, 1932. The current iteration of the IAF was born in 1950.
- The IAF fought in four wars against Pakistan, in 1947-1948, 1965, 1971 (Bangladesh War) and 1999 (Kargil War).
- It helped bring Goa into the Indian Union in 1961.
- In 1962, the IAF delivered essential supplies to the Indian Armed Forces fighting the Chinese Army.
- The IAF helped capture the Siachen Glacier in 1984.
- In 1988, the IAF prevented the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) from overthrowing the government in Maldives.
- The IAF provides support during natural calamities and rescues Indian citizens from foreign lands during crisis. It works with the Department of Space and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Rakesh Sharma who went to space in 1984 was an IAF pilot.
