House collapses into another home during Pomeroy fire

POMEROY, OH (WOWK) — A house in Pomeroy, Ohio collapsed into its neighbor after catching fire Saturday morning.

According to a post on the Pomeroy Fire Department and Firemen’s Association Facebook page, fire crews responded to a residential fire on Mechanic Street around 7:47 a.m. The two-story home was engulfed in flames by the time responders arrived.

As crews worked to put out the flames, the residence next to the burning house began to catch fire. Eventually, the first building collapsed into the second one, causing more damage and further spreading the fire. Both homes ultimately sustained heavy damage.

“Personnel were able to contain the fires in just under one and a half-hours,” the post said.

The tenants of the second residence were able to escape thanks to the warning of a neighbor. No injuries were reported across both incidents.

The American Red Cross is helping the displaced residences of both houses while the Ohio State Fire Marshal is looking into the incident.

Members of the Pomeroy, Rutland and Middleport Fire Departments responded alongside the Meigs County EMS, Meigs County Sheriff’s Office, Pomeroy Police Department, Pomeroy Public Works, Pomeroy Village Code Enforcement, Pullins Excavation and AEP.
