One of Bali’s oldest and most famous hotels is undergoing a rebrand and renovation ahead of its reopening in 2024.
The Grand Inna Bali Beach will return in 2024 as Meru Sanur as part of the newly established Special Economic Zone in the coastal resort.
The hotel, which sits right on the Sanur Beach front, originally opened its doors in 1966, when it was then known as the Bali Beach InterContinental.
The hotel was built using money from the Japanese War Reparations funds. The hotel was of huge significance as it was the first hotel in Bali to be built to international standards and managed internationally.
The hotel spanned over ten stories and offered tourists a choice of 566 rooms on the stunning Sanur coast.
The Bali Beach InterContinental, being the first big hotel on the island, attracted both positive and negative attention.
The development of the Bali Beach InterContinental was really the start of mass tourism in Bali, which caused mixed feelings amongst local leaders and communities.
The development of the towering building ultimately led to the Bali Governor issuing new legislation that meant that any future hotel development would not be permitted to stand any taller than 15m, which is roughly the height of a tall coconut tree. This legislation remains in place to this day.
Spanning over 42 hectares of prime Sanur real estate, the Bali Beach InterContinental latterly became the Hotel Grand Bali Beach and the Grand Inna Bali Beach.
In its next form, the hotel will be known as Meru Sanur as the hotel will be taken over by the Meru Hotel Group who already have three stunning luxury resorts across Bali, Lombok, and Komodo.
The Meru Sanur Hotel and the Meru Convention Centre will play a huge role in the newly developed Special Economic Zone of Sanur.
The hotel and convention center will play a key supporting role not only in the tourism sector in the area but most notably in the new Bali International Hospital.
The Bali International Hospital is set to be finished by April 2024, with the first patients set to be welcomed in Q3 of 2024.
Although construction is nearly finished, the hospital must take several months to test equipment and run in-depth safety and functionality assessments to ensure the facility hits world-class standards.
The Bali International Hospital will be the new face of medical tourism in Indonesia. The country wants to compete with the likes of Thailand and Malaysia as a leading medical tourism provider in Southeast Asia.
Bali is already the destination of choice for tens of thousands of tourists from Australia who travel to the island specifically for affordable and top-quality dental care.
The new Bali International Hospital will be a private healthcare facility available for international patients and private paying Indonesian citizens too.
The hospital will specialize in cardiology, neurology, critical illness (ICU), gastroenterology, and orthopedics.
Cutting-edge medical technologies will be used throughout the hospital, and inpatient and outpatient care will be available from each department.
Tourists will be able to book a high range of treatments, with diagnostic services set to be in high demand from the get-go.
Signature services are set to include rapid response emergency care and a huge range of assessments from the Diagnostic Center, including prevention and detection packages.
These screening services will include medical assessments for all kinds of cancer, as well as cardiovascular and neurovascular diseases, diabetes and systemic diseases, and osteoporosis.
Leaders chose Sanur as the destination for the new Special Economic Health Zone due to its close proximity to I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, its location along the Ngurah Rai Bypass, its stunning coastal views, and existing interest from international travelers as a vacation destination.
