EPL news 2024 | Ange Postecoglou press conference; Tottenham vs Everton; Lewis Hamilton defection

Tottenham Hotspur coach Ange Postecoglou has left the media in stitches after trolling reporters over Lewis Hamilton’s shock defection to Ferrari.

Ahead of his side’s clash with Everton, the Australian was asked whether he was happy with the transfers made in the January window with Tottenham bringing in Timo Werner, Radu Dragusin and Swedish wonderkid Lucas Bergvall.

Postecoglou addressed his side’s need to fill spots in centre back and up front before going over the outgoing deals of players leaving on loan like Ashley Phillips, Alejo Veliz and Alfie Devine.

The 58-year-old then brought about suspense in the press conference when he suggested there was an unknown deal taken off the table at the last minute.

“Probably the only disappointing one was yesterday, I thought there was a really good opportunity for us. The club didn’t feel that it was the right move for us so I’m disappointed with that,” he said before adding: “But he ended up at Ferrari so we just have to cop it.”

Postecoglou’s reference to Hamilton’s defection brought about laughter in the press conference with the manager trolling reporters.

“Look at you all, you were ready to type away,” he said.

“I was going to pause to let his phone blow up,” he added, likely in reference to Tottenham’s media manager.

The reporter who asked the question then admitted, “You threw me there”.

Postecoglou’s moves in the transfer market included two coups with Dragusin preferring Spurs over Bayern Munich while Bergvall was being courted by Barcelona.

The manager believes success on the negotiation table is down to the style of football he’s been able to implement at the club.

“I don’t think it’s so much what we’re saying, I think it’s more what people are seeing, that’s the important thing,” he said.

“It’s like anything in life, you can try and sell a vision or sell something to someone but if there’s tangible physical evidence of it (people will come).

“Anyone that’s watched us in the first half of the year … have seen the aspirations we have to be the kind of football team we want to be. That’s not just me saying it, we’re actually doing it. We’re not the finished product by any stretch.

“We’re giving young guys any opportunity … we’re building a team so I guess from our perspective it’s pleasing that hopefully we become a club that’s a preferred destination, particularly for young players.

“There aren’t too many hidden gems around, everyone knows who the talents are and (hopefully) our point of difference is I’ve always felt your football is your biggest selling point beyond anything else.”
