India is all prepared to host the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 after 12 years. Last time, it was in 2011 when India hosted the World Cup and bagged the trophy on its home ground. With all the teams having their players trained up to the core, the World is ready to witness the much anticipated struggle to win over the trophy.
For this purpose, the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) made an announcement a few months ago that 5 venues will be revamped ahead of the World Cup. Among those, one such stadium is the famous Eden Gardens Stadium located in Kolkata. Built in 1864, Eden Gardens is one of the oldest and 3rd largest cricket stadiums in the world.
How many matches will be played in the iconic stadium?
Also referred as ‘the Mecca of Indian Cricket’, Eden Gardens is all set to host 5 matches of the World Cup with one being the Semi Finals stage 2 scheduled to be played on 16 November.
Apart from this, Eden Gardens is the venue for 4 other matches between Netherlands–Bangladesh, Pakistan-Bangladesh, India–South Africa and England-Pakistan.
ICC’s inspection of the ground
The delegation team of the International Cricket Council along with BCCI has already paid a visit to the venue with an objective to inspect the infrastructure’s ability to handle a large crowd. Cricket Association of Bengal President Snehasis Ganguly has already confirmed that the team didn’t have much observation and that they are satisfied with the work. The only thing that needs to be a little worked on are washrooms. He further added that they are already on the discussion stage for the purpose.
With the tournament all set to be played over 10 cities of India mainly Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Lucknow, Dharamshala, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, the Men in Blue are set to lock horns with Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on October 13.
