Mitchell Starc held his nerve and defended 19 off the last over as Australia beat New Zealand in a high-scoring affair at the ICC World Cup.

Jimmy Neesham scored 58 off 39 balls but was run-out on the penultimate ball of the game as the Black Caps slipped at the last hurdle. Australia won the trans-Tasman battle by five runs.

This was after Travis Head made an explosive entry into the tournament with a blazing 109 off 67 balls, as Australia went on a run rampage and finished their innings all-out for 388.

Head, who recovered from a fractured thumb, and David Warner smashed New Zealand’s pace bowlers with an aggressive 175-run opening wicket stand off 117 balls.

In reply, Rachin Ravindra scored his second World Cup century and almost helped his team chase down the tall target in an epic last game at Dharamsala for the tournament.

New Zealand finished with 9-383 in 50 overs, with Ravindra scoring 116 off 89 balls. It stays third in the points’ table with eight points, but ahead of Australia on net run-rate — also on eight points.

Starc was under pressure in the final over, conceding five wides with his second ball to make the equation 13 runs off five balls.

Neesham’s run out moments later brought Lockie Ferguson to the crease, who needed to hit a six to force the game into a super over.

Starc held firm though with Ferguson only able to push a full ball to point.

“Australia win a magnificent game of cricket, at one of the finest geographical places in the world you can play the game and they’ve taken it to new heights,” New Zealand icon Ian Smith said on commentary.

Post-game, Aussie captain Pat Cummins was in awe of how well the game played out.

“That was awesome, sometimes I had to remember I was on the cricket field, not a spectator, it was a fantastic game, they just kept coming at us,” he said.
