Church members' lawsuit moves forward against First Bossier

BOSSIER CITY, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — The Louisiana Supreme Court concludes that litigation against a local pastor and church leadership can move forward. The Court did rule the church itself could not be named a defendant.

A group of church members from First Baptist Church of Bossier (First Bossier) first sued the church in 2022, attempting to gain access to the church’s financial records.

Among their concerns were claims that church funds were diverted to unapproved projects and lack of financial transparency.

The attorney for the plaintiffs said her clients were saddened to file litigation but felt it was important to find answers to their concerns.

“Little old lady who works at a cleaners, tithes 10 percent of her money to a church and she trusts that it’s going to be used to be consistent with the purposes of a tithe,” explained plaintiff attorney, Allison Jones, “And if that money in a non-profit corporation is misused then the leadership of that non-profit corporation has breached their fiduciary duty to that little old lady.”

Jones says two churches in Texas had made similar allegations of financial impropriety against Senior Pastor Brad Jurkovich.

She says records regarding those allegations were not readily available to the team that recruited Jurkovich to First Bossier.

Jones says the goal of her plaintiffs is to put their concerns into the public record.

“We want to make sure there’s a record so if what we fear has happened, has happened, it will never happen again. We want to get answers to questions under oath. And that’s what my clients are seeking at this point and it’s what the Louisiana Supreme Court has said in its concurring opinion they’re entitled to.

An attorney representing First Bossier has previously said they believe these claims are entirely without merit and intend to defend the matter.

The next court hearing in the case takes place on February 15th
