CHICO — Bruce McLean, known for his advocacy to increase access to health care, withdrew from this fall’s race for the District 7 seat on the Chico City Council.
In making his announcement Saturday afternoon, McLean threw his support to Bryce Goldstein, a city commissioner who has not declared she’s running.
“I firmly believe that Chico requires a type of leadership in tune with the needs of the residents and not the special interests which now dominate the council majority,” McLean said. “Since having more than one Democrat in the same race has always led to defeat and Bryce is also a candidate that will provide the needed leadership we desperately need, I wholeheartedly support her candidacy.”
Goldstein is a member of the Chico Climate Action Commission and previously served as chair of the Planning Commission. She received bipartisan praise for districting maps she submitted when the city established districts in 2020 and redistricted in 2022 due to updated data from the census. She works as a planner for Caltrans.
She’s in the exploratory phase of the campaign. Candidates don’t file with local election officials until the summer for the November ballot.
“After serving on city boards and commissions for over five years, I would be honored to represent my community on Chico City Council,” Goldstein said. “I am meeting with my District 7 neighbors to understand what we can work toward together before formally launching a campaign.”
