India’s National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) got involved and sent notice to Netflix in March 2021, asking the streaming platform to take the series down. The organization, which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, also wrote to the government of the Indian state of Maharashtra, seeking FIR registration against the series creators. However, nothing seems to have come out of that. The state government rejected the order, and the series is still available on Netflix India.

At the India Today Woman Summit in March 2021, actress Pooja Bhatt reacted to the controversy, “There is no greater thing than intention. As far as Bombay Begums is concerned, (a) it’s a work of fiction, (b) what’s glorious about it is that it tells you about five individual women in different stages of their lives starting from somebody who is 13 to somebody who is going to be 49 and hitting menopause. I think when I look at Bombay Begums, I don’t look at it ever as my win; I look at it as a tribe, that is one, the tribe of actors, filmmakers, and creators who actually put their faith and belief into something, and that’s what kind of is resonating.”

As of September 2023, there hasn’t been any news about the development of season 2. Although it can be speculated that the controversy has played a role in it, the fact that Bombay Begums is still available on Netflix India underscores that the makers have the support of the streaming giant. At the event mentioned above, Bhatt explained how eager she was to return to the sets of Bombay Begums.

“I am hungry for season 2 of Bombay Begums, I can’t wait to be Rani again,” the actress said. “I think it is up to the people who consume the show to decide if we come back with season two. But I am at a stage of my life where I am truly grateful. I am humbled by the kind of warmth and kindness coming my way. I think to be able to play yourself, and not play up to the fantasy that someone had about you when you were only nineteen, is liberating. Which is why when you get liberated, it is communicated to people who consume your stuff.”
