Bidding adieu to Matthew Perry a.k.a Chandler Bing; could there BE a funnier guy?

“It’s Sunday, I don’t move on Sundays!” The conviction with which Chandler Bing stated this fact was like a constant hit and no, not much justification was required. And it was precisely on a Sunday that the most beloved character of an American sitcom breathed his last. Deeply saddened and leaving behind a sea of people mourning his loss, a loss that shall feel personal for the rest of eternity now. Rarely do you come across fictional characters that seem so real and tangible that you begin to feel for them almost instinctively? That’s the kind of connection Matthew built with his iconic onscreen persona Chandler or like we would love to call him, Miss Chanandler Bong from FRIENDS.

His screaming into the air, “And I just want a million dollars” like manifesting it for real still resonates with everyone. Jokes came easy to him and it was the seamless line between his onscreen and offscreen avatars that made the masses root for him. With all his idiosyncrasies, awkwardness, hopelessness and desperation for love – he also painted a picture of that perfect man. A loyal friend, a committed partner and a terrific artiste who gave the audience a priceless character to love till time holds still while he combatted many inner demons.

His personal life was a chaotic mess and many times he had conversed with death. He mentioned several times in his autobiography how this was indeed his second life. His life was hanging by a loose thread while FRIENDS was at its peak of success, while he made us laugh and cackle, there was an unbeatable conundrum in his life he could not let go of.

But that’s how it is, isn’t it? The funniest man is often the person who is striving over life’s many trials until it finally gets over. Most of our memories about the iconic moments of American sitcoms from the ’90s, to date, have references to Chandler Bing’s iconic lines.

His fairytale romance with Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) still gives hope to all those who believe in love, his rock-solid friendship with Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) makes us believe in friends like family, his unconditional love and bonding with Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) that made him support them in all their idiotic ventures – from hiding the Christmas gifts, sharing a cheesecake right off the floor, pitching in for Rachel’s epic Ski trip with her family – you name it!

Matthew Perry

He was the complete man, the man of your dreams. Today when he has left for his heavenly abode all his loyal fans can recall are the dialogues that he said and the moments he shared onscreen. Several pictures of Joey sitting on their Barcalounger and staring at the empty seat beside him have surfaced, Chandler is no more. In season 9 his line, “I guess I’ll be the one who dies first” – has gone viral and it truly is deeply painful to agree to it.

No one from the FRIENDS cast has spoken up yet, for if this loss seems so gut-wrenching to us, imagine a group of friends who have eaten together and spent most of their days together since 1994, it truly is a rude shock to his loved ones. A trunk of memories laden with a whole lot of love, care and everything that made their friendship seem like our own.

Their last outing and a gift to their fans were in FRIENDS: The Reunion where the gang of six came together, going down memory lane, spilling BTS stories, having a table read of some of the most special episodes with even more special memories and reducing us into a pool of tears as we laughed and cried tears of joy along with them, in all the merriment and unadulterated happiness that their faces and just being together brought us.

Apartment number 4 which later changed to 19 shall no longer hear the musings of one of the funniest man alive, making everyone laugh, spreading smiles like a rainbow in an overcast sky. No one will walk out to a Halloween party dressed like a giant pink rabbit and no one will throw one-liners to cover up the most awkward moments out there.

Matthew Perry

There will no longer be that instant witty dialogue being rolled out, stating, “I’m not great at advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?”  Sarcasm’s finest deliveries are forever put to rest now. He must be really busy up there, already wreaking a havoc with his instant comic timing, oh what a treat they are in for!

Matthew Perry

Chandler was the bravest and yet a softie at heart who had the ability to laugh at his own flaws and be perfectly comfortable with all his idiocrasies. Such valuable life lessons, what a loss, such that words fail us today. Rarity, they say.

Matthew Perry

But like they said, “No one told you life’s gonna be this way” and he surely left behind an ocean of well-wishers who shall wait to hear just one more joke. Could it BE any more tragic? I guess all we have now are his jokes as a footprint of the talent he left behind for the world to celebrate. We shall forever wait to share that one cup of coffee with him once again as we restart watching FRIENDS for the millionth time, but alas, no one will ask us, ” Sure, but where?”
