Amazfit Active Smartwatch Review with Pros and Cons

Amazfit has been one of the few Chinese smartwatch brands that has managed to survive in the cut-through competition in India. The brand recently introduced the Amazfit Active Smartwatch, positioned below the GTS 4 and GTR 4 models. The Amazfit Active boasts a sleek, rectangular design and promises advanced features such as Bluetooth calling, Readiness score, AI capabilities, and more. Despite the impressive specifications, the real-world performance of these features remains to be seen. After using the Amazfit Active Watch for some time, here are my thoughts on its performance.

Amazfit Active Smartwatch Price

The Amazfit Active Watch is available for Rs. 12,999 in the country via Amazon, Amazfit official website, and authorized retail outlets. It comes in Lavender Purple, Midnight Black, and Petal Pink shades.

Amazfit Active Review: Design

The Amazfit Active boasts a delicate appearance with its 42mm case size. It falls between the 40mm Apple Watch SE and the 44mm models in terms of size, making it ideal for medium-sized hands. Amazfit has made efforts to reduce the weight of the watch by utilizing an aluminum frame and silicone strap, resulting in a mere 24 grams. This lightweight design allows for comfortable all-day wear. Available in Pink, Purple, and Classic Black, I received the Lavender Purple variant for review. The unique shade, combined with a titanium casing and vegan leather strap, adds a touch of elegance. Despite weighing 27 grams, it remains sleek and manageable. However, the limited color options may pose an issue for male consumers who prefer more neutral tones.

Additional color choices like white or brown could enhance the watch’s appeal. Moving on to functionality, the Amazfit Active features a familiar design with a single button on the right side for menu navigation and other tasks. The microphone for calls is conveniently located next to the button, while the speaker is on the opposite side. The back houses a plastic case with sensors and magnetic charging pins.

The watch is equipped with a comfortable strap that is gentle on the skin, allowing for extended wear without irritation. However, wearing it to bed caused sweating on my wrist. If you want to change up the look, you can easily switch out the strap with third-party options. The locking system is user-friendly and quick to adjust. The Amazfit Active smartwatch has a 5ATM rating, making it safe to use underwater up to 50 meters. Whether swimming or jogging in the rain, this watch performs without any problems.

Amazfit Active Review: Display

The Amazfit Active Smartwatch features a 1.75-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 390×450 pixels. With its always-on capability and 2.5D scratch-resistant glass, the display remains protected from scratches. Additionally, it has an anti-fingerprint coating to prevent smudges. Personally, I appreciate this smudge-free display as I find smudges or dirt on any screen quite bothersome. The high resolution ensures vibrant and clear visuals, even under bright sunlight, making it convenient to use during daytime workouts.
The always-on capability allows the screen to activate with a slight twist of the wrist. You have the option to keep the display on at all times or switch to smart mode, where it turns off when not in use. The smart mode also helps conserve battery life. Considering its price range of under 15,000, the display of this smartwatch is quite impressive.

Amazfit Active Review: Watch Faces & App Support

The Amazfit Active smartwatch is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. The smartwatch runs on Zepp OS, which is known for its smooth and efficient performance, making it the only OS apart from WearOS with these qualities. It operates alongside the Zepp Application, which can be downloaded for free from either the Apple Store or Google Play Store. This application provides detailed information on health and fitness and utilizes Zepp Coach to address any fitness or workout-related inquiries. The Zepp app also boasts a clean and user-friendly interface, allowing users to keep track of their fitness and health data for future reference.

To connect the smartwatch to the app, simply install the app and scan the QR code displayed on the watch. It is important to ensure that the Bluetooth on your device is enabled to ensure accurate data storage by the app. Additionally, the app provides the option to customize various watch settings, including My Goals, 3rd party account linking, smart analysis, and Zepp coach. Users can also add their family members to the app, and by staying connected to their phones, they will receive notifications on their smartwatch.

The app offers a wide range of watch faces to choose from, with the ability to store up to eight watch faces directly on the watch itself. If more options are desired, users can access the Profile section of the app, where they will find numerous pre-defined watch faces to select from. Furthermore, there is an option called ‘Portrait Watch Face’ that allows users to convert any image from their phone gallery into a personalized watch face. I utilized this feature by selecting two pictures from my gallery, and the entire process was quick and completed within two minutes.

In addition to its fitness and customization features, the Amazfit Active smartwatch also includes built-in Amazon Alexa for music playback and can store up to 250MB of music on the watch. Furthermore, users can conveniently store their cards and contacts directly on the watch.

Amazfit Active Review: Performance & Health Features

Amazfit Active is packed with a wide range of features, including both health and fitness functionalities, as indicated by its title. I had the opportunity to test out these features over the past few days, and while some were impressive, others fell slightly short. One notable feature is the watch’s extensive collection of over 120 sports modes, allowing you to track your workouts both indoors and outdoors. Although having numerous options is always beneficial, I found that only a few of these modes were frequently used, while others were not utilized as much. I found the walking and indoor cycling modes to be the most useful, and the watch accurately tracked my workouts in these modes. When it came to outdoor activities, the GPS quickly detected my location within 10 seconds and accurately recorded the route I took.

Additionally, the watch is capable of tracking sleep. The sleep tracker provides information on the number of hours slept, the quality of sleep, regularity, and sleep stages, ultimately generating a sleep score. To compare its accuracy, I compared the data from the watch’s sleep tracker to that of a sleep-tracking app already installed on my device, and the results were nearly identical. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Amazfit Active sleep tracker performs well. Furthermore, there is a Readiness score that utilizes my sleep data. By analyzing sleep heart rate, heart rate variability, temperature, and breathing quality, the watch determines how prepared you are to face the day. On days when I was feeling stressed, it accurately indicated that my mental health required attention.

In terms of basic functionalities, the watch also includes a step counter that accurately tracks steps taken. Additionally, it provides hourly reminders to encourage movement and hydration, promoting overall better health.

The health features of this device include a heart rate sensor and a SpO2 monitor. With just one tap, you can measure your heart rate and get information on your stress levels and blood oxygen levels in just 45 seconds. I compared these readings with a pulse oximeter and a BP monitor, and while the SpO2 levels were almost similar, there was a noticeable difference in the heart rate readings.

The watch also supports Bluetooth calling, allowing you to answer and make calls directly from your wrist. It works well in quiet environments, but in crowded places, you may need to make an effort to hear the other person. Additionally, there is an option to store music within the app, which can be convenient during workouts.

Amazfit Active Review: Battery Life and Charging

Amazfit states that the watch is designed to run for 14 days on a single charge. In our experience, even with regular activity tracking, sleep tracking, AOD enabled, and music playing, the watch managed to last for 11 days, which is quite impressive. Once fully charged, you can go without charging for more than 10 days. The 300mAh battery can extend the watch’s life to over 18 days in battery-saver mode. Even in outdoor conditions with GPS activated, the battery can still last for more than 24 hours, which is satisfactory.

Review Verdict: Should you buy Amazfit Active?

The Amazfit Active Smartwatch boasts a wide range of features, making it an attractive option for users. Priced at under 15,000, this smartwatch combines a stylish and lightweight design with a vibrant AMOLED display, long battery life, and practical workout functions, catering to both casual and formal settings. Despite some minor drawbacks such as an uncomfortable strap and slightly inaccurate heart rate sensor, it’s important to remember that perfection is hard to come by in a smartwatch priced at 12k. In summary, the Amazfit Active Smartwatch offers a blend of health, fitness, and workout capabilities in a sleek, gender-neutral, and lightweight package.
