CHICO — Two graduates from the Chico-based Cal Northern School of Law have received appointments to county superior court judgeships, the school announced in a press release.
Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Virginia Gingery to Butte County Superior Court and John Hinely to Sutter County Superior Court. The governor announced the appointments Oct. 8.
Gingery and Hinely both earned their juris doctor degrees from Cal Northern in 2008.
Gingery served as a commissioner for the Butte County Superior Court from 2021 until her appointment to the bench. She worked as a sole practitioner from 2013 until 2015, when she became a deputy county counsel, serving until 2019. Gingery became a Butte County research attorney in 2019 until beginning her stint as commissioner.
She has been a member of the Cal Northern faculty since 2018, teaching legal research.
Hinely, a resident of Colusa County, had served as commissioner for the superior courts of Colusa, Glenn, Plumas and Tehama Counties since 2022. Prior to position, Hinely served as an attorney at the California Department of Housing and Community Development from 2020 to 2022, and was a judge pro tem at Colusa County Superior Court from 2019 to 2022.
He was a sole practitioner from 2008 until 2020. He has served as a professor at Cal Northern since 2021, teaching professional responsibility.
