Aaron Finch Discusses Shubman Gill’s Absence and Ishan Kishan’s Role in India’s World Cup Campaign

The news of Shubman Gill’s illness just days before India’s highly-anticipated World Cup opener against Australia has sent ripples through the cricketing world. As India’s most successful ODI batter this year, with over 1200 runs to his name, Gill’s absence due to dengue presents a significant challenge for the Indian team. While Ishan Kishan stands as a capable replacement, former Australia captain Aaron Finch believes Gill’s unique attributes will be sorely missed.

Gill’s Dominance Against Australia

During the recently concluded series against Australia, which India clinched 2-1, Shubman Gill showcased his prowess, amassing 168 runs. However, it’s his overall ODI record against the five-time champions that stands out – 268 runs in 6 innings at an impressive average of 44.67. Gill’s ability to dominate bowlers in all formats of the game and his apparent lack of weaknesses make him a formidable opponent, as Finch notes.

“What’s going to stand out in this World Cup is the depth of these squads. Most teams have their ideal XI in mind, but injuries and fatigue can alter those plans. However, India remains well-prepared. The difference will be the fear factor Shubman Gill puts into the Australian team,” remarked Finch in a conversation with Star Sports ahead of the World Cup match between Pakistan and the Netherlands in Hyderabad.

Gill’s Versatility and the Ishan Kishan Challenge

While Ishan Kishan’s ODI record as an opener is impressive – 448 runs at an average of 74.7 and a strike rate of 125, his role is set to change due to Gill’s absence. Finch believes that Australia’s opening bowlers, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, would pose a different challenge to Ishan. They are likely to target his initial vulnerability during the first 10-12 balls.

“Ishan Kishan has been vulnerable in the initial deliveries, and Australia will likely open with Starc and Hazlewood to exploit that. Ishan has some technical issues early on, and his front foot tends to close up, which can be exploited with early swing,” explained Finch.

As India grapples with Gill’s unavailability, they place their faith in Ishan Kishan to step up to the challenge. While Gill’s absence is undoubtedly a setback, it also offers an opportunity for the young left-hander to make his mark on the World Cup stage. How well he responds to this challenge will be closely watched by cricket enthusiasts around the globe.
